TAKING GOD SERIOUSLY
Do not misuse the name of the LORD your God.
The LORD will not
let you go unpunished
if you misuse His name.
Exodus 20:7
What's in a Name?
Reputation
Character
Authority
I. WAYS GOD'S NAME CAN BE MISUSED
“Do not bring shame on the name of your God by using it to
swear falsely. I am the LORD.
Leviticus 19:12
Such people claim they know God, but
they deny Him by the way they live. They
are despicable and disobedient,
worthless for doing anything good.
Titus 1:16
The Lord says, "They honor Me with their
lips, but their hearts are far away. And
their worship of Me amounts to nothing
more than human traditions, which they
have simply memorized.”
Isaiah 29:13
"When you pray, do not use a lot of
meaningless words …”
Matthew 6:7
The LORD will not let you go unpunished
if you misuse His name.
Exodus 20:7b
II. HOW CAN I USE GOD'S NAME CORRECTLY?
1. RESPECT GOD'S NAME CONTINUALLY.
Give unto the LORD the glory due unto
His name
Psalms 29:2
Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, O LORD, do not abandon those
who search for you.
Psalms 9:10
For you have heard my vows, O God.
You have given me an inheritance
reserved for those who fear your name.
Psalms 61:5
2. REPRESENT GOD'S NAME CLEARLY.
A person who calls himself a Christian
should not be doing things they know are
wrong.
2 Timothy 2:19
And whatever you do or say, do it as a
representative of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks through him to God the Father.
Colossians 3:17
3. RELY ON GOD'S NAME COMPLETELY.
In Him our hearts rejoice, For we are
trusting in His holy name.
Psalm 33:21
There is salvation in no one else! There
is no other name in all of heaven for
people to call on to save them.
Acts:4:12
But these are written so that you may
continue to believe that Jesus is the
Messiah, the Son of God, and that by
believing in him you will have life by
the power of his name.
John 20:31
A good person produces good things from
the treasury of a good heart, and an
evil person produces evil things from
the treasury of an evil heart. What you
say flows from what is in your heart.
Luke 6:45
